The experience of artmaking amongst others is a powerful process. As humans we are relational creatures, we crave connection and belonging, and each art therapy group cultivates its own “ecosystem” and way of operating. The role of the art therapist is not to interpret what is happening for the group, but to highlight the interactions unfolding in the moment, and focus on the process. The group members then have an opportunity to observe and make their own meaning.
There will be times when members are invited to share feelings and insights with the group, allowing members to feel seen and accepted. Sometimes the experience can bring up difficult memories or emotions, and these moments allow members to re-write harmful or out-of-date messages that no longer sever them or gain new insights and discoveries.
Seeing other people show vulnerability and authenticity has a contagious flow-on effect, and gives permission for others to do the same. That is what can be cultivated within an art therapy group.

Art Therapy Groups
"Art therapy provides a container for our deepest thoughts, feelings, and imaginings. It allows us to externalize the internal and see what we've never seen before. In the group context, art therapy has the potential to foster new relationships, promote understanding, and create a sense of belonging that is rooted in the shared human experience."
